The Mysterious Heso Island is a picture book produced in 1988 with a story by Yukio Kitsukawa and illustrations by Mori Masaki. In 2024 the "Mori Masaki Project," which gathers works by Mori Masaki—active in the worlds of manga and animation—was launched, and this book was published as the first reissue.

Synopsis
"Heso Island" is a place of exile for the world's contrarians, and the descendants of those exiled live on the island. A boy visits the island as a tourist. Through his interactions with the locals, the boy comes to learn the secrets of the world...

Mori Masaki — illustrations
Born March 10, 1941, in Yokohama.
Became independent as a manga artist in 1967.
In 1971 he won the 2nd Kodansha Publishing Culture Award for Jiro ga Yuku and Hamidashi Yaro no Komoriuta.

Animated feature films directed: Natsu e no Umi, Horogumo, Toki no Tabibito, Hadashi no Gen (recipient of a Mainichi Film Concours Ōfuji award), etc.
